New World – Balance of Power

New World’s latest “Balance of Power” video, featuring David Verfaillie, zooms in on the game’s first expansion and forthcoming changes to gear score, perk removal, and essential information to consider as we approach the next season.

Maintaining game balance is a fundamental principle, particularly in the realm of MMORPGs. The New World development team is committed to ensuring that no perk or element dominates to the detriment of others. It’s important to note that this video was recorded shortly after the PTR (Public Test Realm) opened, and as such, Verfaillie couldn’t provide feedback or data from that source. However, this feedback will be a subject for future discussions.

One of the key questions players have revolves around Artifacts and where to obtain them. These sought-after items can be acquired through various in-game activities, including Expeditions, drops from named enemies, and as rewards on the Season Pass track. The PVP reward track also includes Artifacts, increasing the likelihood of players obtaining several. Importantly, the two Artifacts featured on the reward track in Season 3 will remain available in Season 4 for those who miss them.

Players interested in PVE content can achieve a gear score of 650 by completing the Elysian Wilds main story questline and progressing further to 700 through activities like base level Expeditions, Mutations, and open-world content. For those primarily focused on PvP progression, Arena battles and Outpost Rush (OPR) provide a clear path to reach a gear score of 700.

Crafters have a unique route to attain a gear score of 700. There are two crafting methods: Prismatic Scarab crafting, which offers customization but comes with a weekly cooldown, and Chromatic Seal Crafting, which is more economical but provides a random third perk. The latter can be rerolled on select items.

Regarding perk balancing, the primary objective is to encourage diversity in perks, subsequently widening player build options. The development team will continue to assess perk balance, keeping an eye on emerging dominant metas. Perk modifications will also be convertible into attribute modifications, aligning with the approach used for orbital shards.

Despite the ongoing updates and explanations, numerous questions persist in the community. Concerns have been raised about the impact on players who do not own the “Rise of the Angry Earth” expansion. The expansion is set to launch on October 3rd, and it’s expected that additional information will be shared in the lead-up to the release date.
